About the performance

Laments stage highlights from the life of strangers who have run their course, from the underground corners of bar dumps and holes to which no one wanders randomly. It is only in these bars that one is still allowed to publicly express sorrow and misery and open the gaps of most intimate life parts of the tragicomic characters. Since sorrow – the biggest public secret – has become something shameful, the desperate community can only form in the scruffy bars. People in Laments are put in tragicomic situations, persist in them and are struggling to make them bearable. Even though they seek solutions for their current state, they keep finding them only temporary. There are no shortcuts in their world, solution is only brought on by thorough change. However, when sorrow becomes public again, their stories nevertheless turn out to be not so tragicomic …

The drama text Laments is being created as part of the program dubbed MGL Resident Authors.

Jernej Potočan (1996) is a dramaturgy and performing arts student at the Ljubljana-based AGRFT. He has taken on practical dramaturgy and playwriting. Two of his theatre texts have been published (Vsaka pesem se enkrat izpoje and Odpad), while four of his texts were staged as reading performances. In 2018, he got the Grossman Award for his short script Živalski vrt, and in January 2019, the short opera for which he wrote the libretto was staged under the title Uspavanka v sobi brez oken.

"Laments is a decidedly dynamic production that has something for everyone. In this conglomerate, the scenes that take the greatest distance and search for the spots for laughter in their misery are the most prominent." (Jaka Smerkolj Simoneti, Koridor, 4 July 2020)

Première: 20. 6. 2020

The production is 1 hour and 20 minutes long and has no interval.

The performance will not be present at the festival.
